Abstract
Effective communication of coastal ecosystem dynamics to scientists, policymakers, and the public requires more than numerical models; it demands compelling, scientifically accurate visual narratives. This work presents an immersive visualization system within a coastal ecosystem digital twin that specifically brings to life the intricate ecological processes of coral spawning and seagrass growth. By generating high-fidelity 3D environments from multi-source data, we transform static datasets into dynamic, explorable scenes that communicate ecological rhythms and connectivity. The core innovation is the dynamic, realistic reconstruction of key life-history events. We utilize existing coral spawning scenes and established ecological process algorithms to drive procedural particle systems that release buoyant gamete bundles synchronously with environmental triggers. For seagrass, high-resolution chronological growth records are embedded as time-varying growth functions. These control procedural geometry updates, enabling users to witness detailed ecological processes. The entire visualization accurately mirrors the documented phenological patterns. All elements are managed by a level-of-detail system that maintains an interactive frame rate (≥24 fps) while rendering a large number of instances. This work demonstrates that procedural 3D models can transform coastal data into vivid, explorable worlds that bridge the gap between science and society. By making ephemeral ecological events accessible and tangible, the system enhances communication for conservation planning, education, and stakeholder engagement.
