Session:Session 11 - Cross-Scale Physical–Biogeochemical Coupling and Ecological Responses in the Ocean:From Internal Waves to mesoscale processes
Abstract
The Northwest African upwelling system and the Cabo Verde Archipelago represent a unique physical–biogeochemical continuum, where nutrient-rich coastal waters interact with a complex field of eddies and filaments to sustain anomalously high productivity in the oligotrophic eastern tropical North Atlantic. Observational studies have identified wind-forced island wakes and remotely generated mesoscale eddies interacting with island topography as dominant drivers of enhanced nitrate flux and chlorophyll blooms in the Cabo Verde Archipelago, yet their biogeochemical impacts remain poorly constrained in global physical-biogeochemical coupled models due to insufficient horizontal resolution. Here we present a high resolution configuration of the Finite volumE Sea ice-Ocean Model coupled to the Regulated Ecosystem Model (FESOM-REcoM), alongside a 1° companion configuration that serves as a systematic baseline to isolate the biogeochemical impacts attributable to eddy-resolving dynamics. The high-resolution configuration enables us to simulate the biogeochemical signatures of upwelling filaments, westward-propagating nutrient-rich eddies, and locally generated island wake eddies, and to track their expression in nitrate, chlorophyll-a, and particulate organic carbon export. Model results are evaluated against GlobColour ocean colour observations and SWOT high-resolution sea surface height, benchmarking simulated eddy-driven chlorophyll patterns, surface height anomalies, and nitrate distributions against available observational records.
