Abstract
The marine biological pump is a crucial material cycling mechanism in marine ecosystems, driving the transfer of carbon elements from surface waters to deep oceans or sediments through biological processes and behaviors. This process begins with phytoplankton fixing dissolved CO2 via photosynthesis to form particulate organic carbon; subsequently, through a series of activities such as grazing, transport, and sedimentation, dissolved inorganic and organic carbon involved in active CO2 exchange/transformations between the upper ocean and atmosphere are converted into settling particulate matter and transported to deep oceans or sediments, rendering them uninvolved in atmospheric CO2 exchange/transformations over timescales of centuries to millennia. Therefore, alongside phytoplankton photosynthesis, biological grazing also serves as a key driving force of the marine biological pump. Grazing behavior facilitates the rapid sedimentation of organic particles in forms such as feces and detritus, with a portion ultimately buried in sediments to form long-term sequestered carbon. Oyster raft farming can significantly enhance the burial flux of settling particulate carbon, constituting one of the vital components of marine carbon sinks. This study focuses on the raft farming areas of Crassostrea rivularis in Guangdong Province, with biogenic settling particulate carbon as the research subject, conducting a one-year monitoring and assessment of carbon sink potential. It provides scientific tools for coastal aquaculture to address climate change and achieve sustainable development, while also offering references for carbon sink accounting in bivalve farming across other regions.
