Abstract
Underwater field surveys are constrained by limited single-dive duration and restricted daily diving frequency; access to in-situ benthic environments is therefore extremely scarce. Underwater 360° spherical cameras deliver continuous accompanying omnidirectional recording throughout dives, capturing environmental and biological data without blind spots within precious submerged sampling windows. This maximizes observational coverage and fully unlocks the scientific value of every single dive operation.
Such continuous all-round footage documents both natural benthic ecosystems and the full workflow of field investigations synchronously. The complete visual archive serves as credible visual evidence for subsequent data validation, on-site authenticity confirmation and retrospective process review, substantially improving the rigor and traceability of survey datasets. Researchers can fully concentrate on underwater sampling and field measurements without diverting attention to framing shots; multi-perspective frames can be extracted from raw spherical footage in post-production, balancing operational efficiency and comprehensive documentation.
Immersive spherical footage enables high-fidelity reconstruction of authentic marine survey scenarios, allowing audiences to virtually submerge underwater via VR headsets. It delivers intuitive visual materials for undergraduate teaching and scientific training, while helping the public gain tangible insight into marine fieldwork. As such, spherical imaging acts as a versatile medium bridging fundamental marine research, talent cultivation and public ocean science communication.
